About

After recent renovations – I decided to design and build a new “food production” courtyard to produce enough food to replace about 60% of our food intake for about two people. This is a difficult task – in a courtyard area of about 4m x 8m.

The challenge is planting in succession so that crops mature at different times and you don’t end up with a glut of one type of fruit / vegetable. Preserving food can help in this situation but planning is the key.

My basic garden layout is shown below:GardenPlan

The garden is divided up into different areas:

  • Espalier trees / Shrubs, which are made up of the following varieties;
    • Bay Tree
    • Kalamata Olive Tree
    • Tahitian Lime Tree
    • Cabernet SauvigonĀ Grape Vine
  • Miniature Orchard (With Trellis)
    • Johnathon Apple Tree
    • Granny Smith Apple Tree
    • Dwarf Nectarine
    • Dwarf Pear
  • Herb Garden
  • Berries (Strawberries and Blueberries)
  • Vegetable Garden
