After recent renovations – I decided to design and build a new “food production” courtyard to produce enough food to replace about 60% of our food intake for about two people. This is a difficult task – in a courtyard area of about 4m x 8m.
The challenge is planting in succession so that crops mature at different times and you don’t end up with a glut of one type of fruit / vegetable. Preserving food can help in this situation but planning is the key.
My basic garden layout is shown below:
The garden is divided up into different areas:
- Espalier trees / Shrubs, which are made up of the following varieties;
- Bay Tree
- Kalamata Olive Tree
- Tahitian Lime Tree
- Cabernet SauvigonĀ Grape Vine
- Miniature Orchard (With Trellis)
- Johnathon Apple Tree
- Granny Smith Apple Tree
- Dwarf Nectarine
- Dwarf Pear
- Herb Garden
- Berries (Strawberries and Blueberries)
- Vegetable Garden
